When would I need to use a notary?

A notary public is a specialised lawyer appointed and regulated by the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury to verify facts, witness deeds, and authenticate documents for use in jurisdictions outside of England and Wales.

A notary will verify the authenticity of a document and must assess whether the person entering into a transaction has the capacity, will and understanding to do so.

You will usually have been asked to see a notary because you have a document that needs to be used abroad.

A notary will often deal with powers of attorney appointing someone to act on your behalf, for example to buy or sell property, documents related to the release of funds from estates, documents connected with education or immigration.

Organisations that trade overseas may need verification of identification and notarisation of company and business documents.
